Dog & Scissors (Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyō or InuHasa)

Dog and Scissors came as a recommendation from someone who just seemed to know what I would like I guess. This was the first one she mentioned and it was after my interest in anime waned, there was a lot of crap being put out there. She did tell me that part of her reasoning is because the two main characters were similar to us in some ways and she was right on that. Plus we do share a lot of similar thoughts on things so I figured why not give it a try. This along with Dusk Maiden of Amnesia, No Game No Life, Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai!, Maid Sama! and a few others came from her and you can check my ratings on all of them. It’s kind of weird how a lot of shows have characters that are kind of like us, we aren’t Japanese tropes dammit. Are we?

The show is centered around a high school student named Kazuhito Harumi, who is obsessed with reading books. One day he was reading a book in a cafe and a robbery takes place. There is a dark haired woman, named Kirihime Natsuno, who becomes the target of the robber and Kazuhito jumps in to protect her. Kazuhito was killed but he had one burning desire, to read the last book in a series by his favorite writer. He gets a second chance at life but as a dog and this is where the story gets interesting and their adventures begin.

Kazuhito is a smart, by the book kind of guy, sometimes myopic who decided to try to save the life of Kirihime Natsuno, a sadist, yandere, uptight writer who was in the middle of writing while the robbery took place. They’re the main protagonists for this offbeat comedy and end up taking on several adventures and adversaries. The other characters they meet will play a role in the outcome of the story and do get some decent screen time.

The art in the show is very good and the story is…odd? Not sure what to call it but it’s not normal, not sure there is a classification for the story or plot. After a while it’s just about the comedy angles and the ridiculousness is what keeps you laughing. You have sadists, mind control, fights with super scissors, romance, masochists and more. Not sure I can call it a plot with the direction that they go in. The show has a plot and subplots but it’s more about HOW they get there then why or when. It’s even difficult for me to classify the show, I have it tagged as comedy but there are some parts that I’m not sure what to classify them as, probably supernatural.

This show is one of my favorites and gets a 4.5 star rating from me. No not because the main characters are similar to me and the woman I call senpai, when it comes to the amount of anime watching. It’s one of my go to shows when I need something to laugh at or when things go sideways with senpai and I need to remind myself that she’s just yandere-ing. Needless to say, I’ve seen the show a few more times than I care to admit to. I have a feeling that this one may be a matter of taste and some won’t like it but I can’t tell you humorless people out there what to watch and expect you to like it. But the rest of you, enjoy the show.
