SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist (Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai)

SHIMONETA is one that I picked up because the name alone seemed like it would be funny. Think about it, could you imagine a world where people didn’t tell dirty jokes? Even if you don’t like them, you have people who do, people who make it like their sole purpose. It’s like the Star Trek analogy. Could you live in a world where everyone is the same?

It’s been 16 years since the “Law for Public Order and Morals in Healthy Child-Raising” was passed. This law bans crude language and sexual material in Japan. Tanukichi Okuma enrolls in the country’s leading school in public morals but he is soon invited into the Anti-Societal Organization named SOX, by it’s founder Ayame Kajou. As a member of SOX, Tanukichi is forced to take part in obscene acts seen as terrorism, going against the student council which is helmed by a girl he has a crush on, the uptight council president Anna.

Tanukichi is actually picked by Ayame for reasons which you find out pretty early in the show. Ayame on the otherhand is just a girl with a perverse mind and crude mouth, who wants to go against the law. Anna, who Tanukichi has a crush on starts as a very proper personality but she is a teenager like any other, she’s a real wildcard in this show and makes things very interesting. The interaction between these 3 and the rest of the characters is what keeps this show from being a random crude show with no appeal.

I really didn’t expect much from the show. I figured they would just half ass most of it to fit around the plot but they did a good job of keeping things moving. You actually have the main plot and a side plot and other things going on in the show so it’s not just crude joke here, lewd comment there. The opening and ending songs are just simple catchy songs that fit the show’s goofy personality. When it comes to personality, this show has a lot of it.

This show is crude, lewd, ecchi as hell but it always kept me laughing. I can’t say it’s a recommendation because people and their problem with “ecchi”. If you watch anime then get used to it, ecchi is commonplace. Especially because the law they passed, so people are going to push those boundaries. If you want ecchi, crude language and a few laughs then watch this one. It kind of reminds me of Seitokai Yakuindomo which I want to watch again now. SHIMONETA was definitely better than I expected it to be.

For those of you who want to see it uncensored, there is an uncensored version. I watched it censored and that was fine for me.
