Tenchi Muyo! GXP

Tenchi Muyo! GXP is a different direction from the earlier Tenchi series Ryo-Ohki, Universe and Tokyo, while the others are based on the continuity of Ryo-Ohki, GXP is a parallel series. Tenchi is not your main character but he does make an appearance, along with some of the others. Now it’s not so different that there not a kid being chased by a bunch of beautiful women, without that, it’s not a Tenchi series. It’s just that there is a different main character and he’s a little ‘different’.

The story revolves around Seina who seems to be the world’s unluckiest person. He’s so unlucky that he literally stumbled across a GXP recruiter who was there for Tenchi and he got taken instead. Seina’s luck is so bad that they use him for a decoy to find space pirates. Luckily for Seina there are people who seem to cancel out his bad luck, the recruiter Kaunaq, his childhood friend Kiriko, a space pirate named Ryoko and a witch named Neiju. With the help of these 4 women, Seina is able to pilot some of the most powerful ships in the Tenchi universe to try to defeat the Barta pirates. While the women are trying to defeat each other and capture Seina’s heart.

As you’ll notice with all the Tenchi series, the shows are done well though sometimes they seem like they’re a generation behind in terms of animation. Back in the 90s and early 00s, things were handled a lot differently. They didn’t just rush something out there to make a quick buck. Though the opening theme is a bit odd and I’m not sure it even makes sense, everything else falls right in place.

If you’re a fan of Tenchi Muyo! then you will enjoy this one. Of course this is my opinion but the ones starring Tenchi are better. Tenchi seems more like a lead character while Seina feels like the comedy relief sidekick but it does lead to a few laughs and head shakes. Check it out if you haven’t already but make sure you see Ryo-Ohki first so you’ll have some familiarity with the characters and a little history on the show.
